Successful Cleft Lip, Palate Surgeries Continue to Grow in U.S.
SKOKIE, IL-Doctors involved in dentofacial orthodontics see cleft lip and palate cases from two perspectives today. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 7,000 American children are born with an oral cleft defect.
When a child has a cleft lip, their lip hasn’t formed completely and isn’t closed properly. Cleft palate, on the other hand, means that there’s a hole in the roof of their mouth.
Both not only cause cosmetic problems for children, but also issues with eating, their ears and sinuses, improper development of the teeth and even speaking.
Dr. Michael Stosich currently serves as a craniofacial orthodontist on the cleft lip and palate team at the University of Chicago Medical Center. As a global expert on the topic, Dr. Stosich has seen many positive steps forward when it comes to correcting cleft lip and palate.
“There’s been a great deal of research done in recent years that have yielded incredible results,” says Dr. Stosich. “It’s a natural response for parents to feel nervous when they see their child has a cleft lip or palate. But the surgeries we perform now are very successful.”
Based on information from the March of Dimes, it’s not perfectly clear what causes oral clefts. Common factors for an increased risk include gene changes, folic acid deficiency before pregnancy, drinking alcohol during pregnancy and smoking during pregnancy.
However, Dr. Stosich sees many cleft lip and palate cases where the mother does everything right.
