Tips to Help You Save Money on Braces

GRAYSLAKE, IL-You might have just recently got the news that your child will need braces. Parents and children typically have mixed reactions when they hear this. Children might be a bit skeptical at first, while parents are glad that their child will have straight, beautiful teeth.

But then reality starts to sink in. How will you be able to afford orthodontic care? According to Embrace-It, an online orthodontic resource, the cost of various orthodontic care plans can range from $3,000-$8,000. Though this may sound like a lot of money, it’s truly an investment in your child’s smile, as well as their overall health and success.

Years ago, a team of social psychologists confirmed that a person’s teeth could influence whether they will be successful in life. And more recently, survey results revealed that straight teeth could make or break your first impression when meeting someone.

Kelton Research surveyed over 1,000 Americans and asked participants to provide their input regarding people with straight and crooked teeth. Following the questionnaire, the data received was fairly one-sided. Those with straight teeth were associated with success, a better social life and a more colorful personality.

Interestingly, 45 percent of participants claimed that people with straight teeth have an edge during the job interview process. They were also thought to be healthier, more intelligent and wealthier.

On the social side, 38 percent said that they wouldn’t go on a date with someone with crooked teeth, while 73 percent cited people with straight teeth as being the most trustworthy.

So how badly does your child want straight teeth? In the study, 87 percent were willing to trade in something for one year in order to achieve an attractive smile. Maybe that could mean paying for your child’s orthodontic care and holding off buying them a car when they turn 16.

Parents still need some guidance today when it comes to saving money for their child’s orthodontic care.
Last month, Cameron Huddleston wrote an article for Kiplinger on how to save money on braces. Check out her strategies and how they connect to Dr. Michael Stosich at Stosich Consulting.

1. Start treatment early

Similar to other aspects of a person’s health, there are benefits of starting orthodontic treatment at a young age.
“Young patients who come in might show signs of crowding or issues with their bite,” says Dr. Stosich. “If we can create an initial treatment plan where all of a child’s teeth can erupt properly, we nip a lot of future problems in the bud.”

Dr. Stosich and his staff offer several devices that are ideal for early treatment. Hyrax Rapid Palatal Expansion Braces, Lower Holding Arch and the Nance Appliance are placed to direct proper upper and lower jaw growth. The purpose of using these devices is to not only improve one’s bite, but their facial profile as well.
Keep in mind that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7.

2. Ask about payment plans

If parents are able to spread out the cost of braces over several months or years, it’s a bit easier to budget for the orthodontic care expense. At Stosich Consulting, the staff offers a percentage discount for a one-time payment at the beginning of treatment, as well as no-interest auto-draft monthly payment plans.

They also accept all major credit cards and take Care Credit, a popular low-interest medical loan program.

“There’s no question that orthodontic care can be a financial burden on many families,” says Dr. Stosich. “That’s why our staff will work with you to develop a personalized payment plan that fits your needs. We care more about your child’s beautiful smile and see it as a lifelong investment.”

3. Pay the total fee upfront

If you would prefer to pay the total fee for orthodontic care upfront, you may be eligible for a small discount. Check with our staff if this option interests you, as opposed to paying in monthly installments.

4. Use flex account money

Does your employer offer a flexible spending account? Through this, you can set aside up to $2,500 annually to pay for certain medical expenses, including orthodontic care. Depending on your flex funds, parents may be able to save more than a quarter of the total cost of braces.
