Study Says Misaligned Teeth are the #1 Cause of Bulling
GRAYSLAKE, ILLINOIS- The unfortunate reality of bullying in America’s schools has drawn heavy media exposure lately. According to one recent study, kids with severely misaligned teeth are targeted most.
The research, which focused on how dentofacial features contribute to a child’s risk of becoming bullied, was conducted in Amman, Jordan. A sample of 920 sixth grade students were given questionnaires regarding what physical features were the subject of ridicule from other children. Nearly half the students- 433 of them- listed unattractive teeth as the chief reason why a child would be bullied, followed by weight and strength issues.
The findings were published in the December issue of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Professionals at the American Association of Orthodontists say the study is applicable to American students.
“The results of the study aren’t surprising.” says Grayslake orthodontist Dr. Michael Stosich. “Teeth are simply noticeable. Even when the mouth is closed, an overjet or underbite is still prominent.”
According to surveyed students, dental problems bullies target most are gaps between teeth, missing teeth, misshapen teeth and pronounced upper anterior teeth, often labeled as “bucked.”
