Grayslake Orthodontist Specializes in Craniofacial Reconstruction

Grayslake Orthodontist Specializes

Grayslake, Ill. Every year thousands of babies are born with birth defects or suffer from facial injuries that require surgery. Children often need craniofacial reconstruction to repair abnormalities in the shape of the skull and facial features due to birth defects or genetic disorders. Craniofacial reconstruction also repairs traumatic injuries resulting from accidents. Craniofacial reconstruction in children requires special techniques and planning because the surgeon must allow for the future growth of the child’s facial bones and features.

Adults usually require craniofacial reconstruction following a head or facial trauma, but it is also performed on cancer patients who have lost part of the bony structures or soft tissue of the face following tumor surgery. In both adults and children, the reconstruction is intended to restore proper functioning of the patient’s mouth, jaw, and sensory organs as well as improve his or her appearance.

Traumatic injuries to the face and head, including blunt traumas, tears, lacerations, and burns, may require specialized treatment. The procedure differs for each issue; for example, heat, chemicals, or electricity can cause burns. Dr. Stosich will evaluate each patient, talk with you about your needs, and recommend a treatment based on you. We know there are issues that are out of your control, and we also know that you want to be taken care of in a professional, caring environment. Our specialty care and commitment to each patient’s needs is why our patients love us.

According to the American Burn Institute, there are 1.1 million burn injuries each year in the United States that are serious enough to require medical treatment. A 2001 study found that 16,879 adults needed plastic surgery to repair burn injuries, while 24,298 required maxillofacial surgery for injuries to the face and jaw.

About 7% of the children born each year in the United States are affected by birth defects of the head and face. An extremely frequent issue is a cleft palate. Cleft lip or palate is the fourth most common birth defect that affects American children, with one in every 700 newborns suffering this issue. The study found that Asian-American children have a higher prevalence of cleft palate, but African-American children have a lowerrate of occurrence.
