New Year, New Smile
KENILWORTH AND GRAYSLAKE, ILLINOIS – It’s not too late to make your New Year’s resolutions. Getting a beautiful, healthy smile should be at the top of the list for 2012.
Having straight teeth is just a great side benefit of going through orthodontic treatment. There are many health benefits, as well.
When the teeth are aligned correctly, it is easier to brush and floss. Crooked teeth provide a hiding place for debris and bacteria, which can lead to decay and gum disease. Research has shown that periodontal disease may be associated to heart disease. A consistent good oral hygiene regime can keep problems at bay.
“It’s a great feeling to have a fantastic smile, and the associated health benefits are a plus,” says Dr. Michael Stosich, a pediatric orthodontic provider in Grayslake, IL.
Straight teeth are also easier to work with. Chewing and talking can be difficult if the teeth are misaligned, or the bite is off. Underbites and overbite can lead to wear and tear, problems eating or speech issues.
If your child has a noticeable jaw problem such as an underbite, seek an orthodontist’s help as soon as possible. The earlier it is corrected, the better. The longer you wait, the chance of them getting surgery rises. Once growth stops, the jaw typically cannot be pushed back into correct the position with braces or appliances alone. An oral surgeon will have to go in, break the jaw and push it back. The jaw is wired shut until it heals.
You can start the year off right by getting yourself or your child examined by an orthodontist. Orthodontic treatment can start at any age, and with a complimentary consultation, you have nothing to lose.
